How to answer "Tell me about yourself"

This question is usually an invitation to give a short, relevant summary, not your life story. About a minute to ninety seconds is a sensible target.

Present, past, future

  1. Step 1

    Present

What you do now or most recently, in a sentence or two, with the strengths most relevant to this role.

  2. Step 2

    Past

One or two experiences that built those strengths, chosen because they connect to the job.

  3. Step 3

    Future

Why this role is the logical next step and what you hope to contribute.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Walking through your resume line by line.
  • Sharing personal details unrelated to the role.
  • Being so brief that you give the interviewer nothing to follow up on.
  • Reading from notes. Know your three points and say them naturally.

Making it yours

Write your answer as three bullets, not a paragraph. Say it aloud a few times and adjust the wording each time so it stays conversational. Adapt the emphasis for each role.

Try it out loud

Reading helps; saying answers aloud helps more. Practise with Ava and get feedback on structure and evidence.
