Cloud Engineer mock interview

Designs, builds and maintains infrastructure on cloud providers such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Day to day that includes provisioning services with code, managing networking and access, keeping costs in check and making sure systems are backed up and resilient. A good interview for this role tests whether you can show that work, not just name it.

Ava, the AI interviewer, will ask you questions on cloud architecture & core services, cloud networking, identity & access management and infrastructure as code and 4 more skills, follow up on what you say, and finish with a report that quotes your own words back to you.

Skills assessed in a cloud engineer interview

  • Cloud architecture & core services

    Role skill

Chooses compute, storage and database services with clear reasons about scale, cost, management effort and trade-offs.

  • Cloud networking

    Role skill

Explains virtual networks, subnets, routing, gateways, security groups and DNS, and troubleshoots connectivity step by step.

  • Identity & access management

    Role skill

Applies least privilege, roles over long-lived keys, account structure and guardrail policies, with examples.

  • Infrastructure as code

    Role skill

Uses Terraform, OpenTofu, CloudFormation, Bicep or similar with reusable modules, state management, reviews and pipelines.

  • Cost optimisation

    Role skill

Uses tagging, cost reports, right-sizing, commitments and cleanup, and quantifies savings achieved.

  • Reliability & disaster recovery

    Role skill

Sets recovery targets, designs backups and multi-zone or multi-region setups, and actually tests restores.

  • Communication & documentation

    Behavioural

Explains designs and trade-offs in plain language and leaves clear diagrams and runbooks for others.

  • Ownership

    Behavioural

Spots and fixes problems proactively, follows work through to completion, and takes responsibility for results.

Sample cloud engineer interview questions

8 of the 12 questions Ava can ask for this role, one or more per skill. In a real session she adapts them to your level and follows up on your answers.

  1. Q1Cloud architecture & core servicesEntry level

If you had to host a simple web app with a database in the cloud, which services would you pick, and why?

A strong answer: Reasonable compute choice, managed database, load balancing, storage for files, backups and basic security, with reasons tied to cost and effort.

  2. Q2Identity & access managementEntry level

What does least privilege mean in cloud access management, and how would you apply it to a new developer joining the team?

A strong answer: Only the permissions needed, role or group based access, single sign-on, no shared keys, separate production access, and periodic review.

  3. Q3Cloud networkingEntry level

Explain the difference between a public and a private subnet, and what kinds of resources you would put in each.

A strong answer: Public has a route to an internet gateway, private does not; load balancers in public, app servers and databases in private, outbound through a NAT gateway.

  4. Q4Infrastructure as codeMid level

How do you structure infrastructure code so several teams and environments can reuse it without stepping on each other?

A strong answer: Shared versioned modules, separate state per environment, variables for differences, review and pipeline-driven applies, and clear ownership.

  5. Q5Cost optimisationMid level

Tell me about a time you cut a cloud bill. How did you find where the money was going, and what did you change?

A strong answer: Used cost tools and tagging, found idle or oversized resources or bad storage tiers, made changes safely, and quantified the savings.

  6. Q6Reliability & disaster recoveryMid level

How would you set up backups for a production database, and how would you prove they actually restore?

A strong answer: Automated snapshots and point-in-time recovery, copies in another account or region, retention policies, and scheduled restore tests.

  7. Q7Communication & documentationAny level

Tell me about a time you had to explain a cloud design or cost trade-off to someone non-technical. How did you make it land?

A strong answer: Plain language, focus on business impact, simple visuals or comparisons, and checking understanding.

  8. Q8OwnershipAny level

Tell me about a time you found a problem in infrastructure nobody had asked you to look at. What did you do?

A strong answer: Noticed proactively, assessed risk, fixed or escalated it appropriately, and followed through to a lasting solution.

What a strong cloud engineer answer looks like

  • Cloud architecture & core services

Chooses compute, storage and database services with clear reasons about scale, cost, management effort and trade-offs.

  • Cloud networking

Explains virtual networks, subnets, routing, gateways, security groups and DNS, and troubleshoots connectivity step by step.

  • Communication & documentation

Explains designs and trade-offs in plain language and leaves clear diagrams and runbooks for others.

How the practice works

  1. Step 1

    Choose your level

Pick intern through lead. The cloud engineer question bank is labelled for 3 entry-level, 4 mid-level and 3 senior questions (plus 2 for any level), and Ava leans toward the ones that fit.

  2. Step 2

Answer out loud or by typing

Ava asks 4 or 7 main questions, depending on the length you choose, such as the cloud architecture & core services question above. You can also add a short coding exercise. Typing is always available if you can't speak.

  3. Step 3

Get feedback you can act on

Each skill is scored against the evidence you gave, with the specific points from your answers. In practice mode you also get a check against the situation, task, action and result structure, a stronger version of each answer built only from what you said, and what to practise next.

Frequently asked questions

Which skills does the Cloud Engineer mock interview cover?
Cloud architecture & core services, Cloud networking, Identity & access management, Infrastructure as code, Cost optimisation, Reliability & disaster recovery, Communication & documentation and Ownership. The first 6 are role skills; communication & documentation and ownership are the behavioural part.
What kind of questions will I get?
Questions come from a bank of 12 written for this role. An entry-level one is “If you had to host a simple web app with a database in the cloud, which services would you pick, and why?” and a senior one is “A company wants to move a large on-premises application to the cloud. How would you decide between moving it as is and re-architecting it?”.
How will my identity & access management answer be judged?
Against what strong evidence looks like for that skill: applies least privilege, roles over long-lived keys, account structure and guardrail policies, with examples. Anything you don't mention is not credited, and nothing is invented for you.
Is this useful for AWS engineer or Azure engineer roles?
Yes. AWS engineer, Azure engineer, GCP engineer and cloud administrator are treated as close to cloud engineer, so the same skills and questions apply. You can also type any other role on the setup screen.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Starting practice is free, and a free account is required before the interview begins. The feedback is guidance for your preparation, not a prediction of any hiring decision.
