Data Analyst mock interview

Turns business data into answers, reports and dashboards that help teams make decisions. Day to day that means writing SQL, cleaning data in spreadsheets or BI tools, investigating changes in metrics and presenting findings. A good interview for this role tests whether you can show that work, not just name it.

Ava, the AI interviewer, will ask you questions on sql querying, data cleaning & spreadsheets, visualisation & dashboards and metrics & business sense and 4 more skills, follow up on what you say, and finish with a report that quotes your own words back to you.

  • SQL querying

    Role skill

Explains joins, grouping and window functions accurately and spots how query mistakes produce misleading numbers.

  • Data cleaning & spreadsheets

    Role skill

Describes systematic steps for duplicates, formats and blanks, and keeps the cleaning repeatable rather than one-off hand edits.

Sample data analyst interview questions

8 of the 12 questions Ava can ask for this role, one or more per skill. In a real session she adapts them to your level and follows up on your answers.

  1. Q1SQL queryingEntry level

What's the difference between an inner join and a left join, and when could picking the wrong one give you misleading numbers?

A strong answer: Inner keeps only matches, left keeps all rows from the first table, and the wrong choice silently drops or duplicates records.

  2. Q2Data cleaning & spreadsheetsEntry level

You're handed a spreadsheet of sales with duplicate rows, mixed date formats and some blank regions. How would you clean it up?

A strong answer: Keeps the original, identifies true duplicates, standardises dates, decides how to treat blanks, and documents or automates the steps.

  3. Q3Visualisation & dashboardsEntry level

How do you decide which kind of chart to use for a particular piece of data?

A strong answer: Lines for trends, bars for comparisons, careful use of pie charts, and choosing based on the question the viewer needs answered.

  4. Q4Analytical problem solvingMid level

Weekly sign-ups dropped fifteen percent last week. Walk me through how you'd figure out why.

A strong answer: Checks for tracking or data issues first, then segments by channel, device, region and funnel step, and considers seasonality or releases.

  5. Q5Metrics & business senseMid level

If you were asked to define the key metrics for a subscription business, which would you choose and why?

A strong answer: Acquisition, activation, retention or churn, recurring revenue and customer lifetime value, linked to decisions the business makes.

  6. Q6Communication & storytellingMid level

Tell me about a time you turned an analysis into a clear recommendation that someone actually acted on.

A strong answer: Clear headline, supporting evidence pitched to the audience, a specific recommended action and the outcome that followed.

  7. Q7Stakeholder managementSenior

How would you move a team that constantly sends you ad hoc data requests toward answering more of their own questions?

A strong answer: Finds common request patterns, builds self-service dashboards or datasets, trains users and keeps time for deeper analysis.

  8. Q8Basic statisticsSenior

A marketing manager says a campaign worked because sales went up the month it ran. How would you test whether that's really true?

A strong answer: Considers seasonality and other changes, uses a comparison or control group, looks at prior trends and is clear about uncertainty.

What a strong data analyst answer looks like

  • SQL querying

Explains joins, grouping and window functions accurately and spots how query mistakes produce misleading numbers.

  • Data cleaning & spreadsheets

Describes systematic steps for duplicates, formats and blanks, and keeps the cleaning repeatable rather than one-off hand edits.

  • Communication & storytelling

Leads with a clear recommendation, uses plain language and tailors the level of detail to the audience.

How the practice works

  1. Step 1

    Choose your level

Pick intern through lead. The data analyst question bank is labelled for 3 entry-level, 4 mid-level and 3 senior questions (plus 2 for any level), and Ava leans toward the ones that fit.

  2. Step 2

Answer out loud or by typing

Ava asks 4 or 7 main questions, depending on the length you choose, such as the sQL querying question above. You can also add a short coding exercise. Typing is always available if you can't speak.

  3. Step 3

Get feedback you can act on

Each skill is scored against the evidence you gave, with the specific points from your answers. In practice mode you also get a check against the situation, task, action and result structure, a stronger version of each answer built only from what you said, and what to practise next.

Frequently asked questions

Which skills does the Data Analyst mock interview cover?
SQL querying, Data cleaning & spreadsheets, Visualisation & dashboards, Metrics & business sense, Analytical problem solving, Basic statistics, Communication & storytelling and Stakeholder management. The first 6 are role skills; communication & storytelling and stakeholder management are the behavioural part.
What kind of questions will I get?
Questions come from a bank of 12 written for this role. An entry-level one is “What's the difference between an inner join and a left join, and when could picking the wrong one give you misleading numbers?” and a senior one is “How would you move a team that constantly sends you ad hoc data requests toward answering more of their own questions?”.
How will my visualisation & dashboards answer be judged?
Against what strong evidence looks like for that skill: matches chart types to the question, keeps dashboards focused on decisions, and mentions tools like Power BI, Tableau or Looker. Anything you don't mention is not credited, and nothing is invented for you.
Is this useful for SQL analyst or analytics specialist roles?
Yes. SQL analyst, analytics specialist, insights analyst and junior data analyst are treated as close to data analyst, so the same skills and questions apply. You can also type any other role on the setup screen.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Starting practice is free, and a free account is required before the interview begins. The feedback is guidance for your preparation, not a prediction of any hiring decision.
