Prep pack

Interview prep: Agency or consultancy

Client-service organisations where you work on several projects for different clients.

These packs describe general patterns for a type of organisation. They are not about any specific employer, and processes vary a lot. Always follow the instructions you are given for your own interview.

What interviews can look like

  • Questions about handling multiple clients and competing deadlines.
  • Case-style or scenario discussions about a client problem.
  • Interest in communication, presentation and managing expectations.

What to show

  • Structuring an unfamiliar problem quickly.
  • Communicating clearly with people outside your specialism.
  • Managing time across projects.
  • Handling feedback and changes of direction calmly.

How to prepare

  • Practise case questions aloud using a frame-structure-analyse-recommend shape.
  • Prepare a story about a difficult stakeholder or changing brief.
  • Have a short portfolio or examples you can walk through.
  • Prepare to explain one past project in two minutes and in ten.

Questions you could ask

  • How are projects staffed and how is workload balanced?
  • How do you handle a client changing the scope?
  • How is learning shared between teams?
  • What does good client feedback look like here?

Watch out for

  • Presenting only outputs. Explain the problem, your reasoning and the result.
