Interview prep: Growing scale-up

Organisations past the earliest stage that are adding structure, process and specialist roles.

These packs describe general patterns for a type of organisation. They are not about any specific employer, and processes vary a lot. Always follow the instructions you are given for your own interview.

What interviews can look like

  • A more defined process, often with a screen, a skills discussion and a panel or team conversation.
  • Questions about growing systems, teams and processes, not just building the first version.
  • Interest in how you work with other teams as roles become more specialised.

What to show

  • Improving something that was already working but not scaling.
  • Working across teams and clarifying responsibilities.
  • Measuring results in a way you can explain.
  • Balancing new work with maintaining what exists.

How to prepare

  • Prepare a story about a process you improved and how you knew it worked.
  • Prepare a story about disagreeing with a colleague and resolving it.
  • Review your own metrics or outcomes you can talk about honestly.
  • Practise explaining your work to a non-specialist.

Questions you could ask

  • Which parts of the organisation are changing fastest?
  • How do teams coordinate when priorities compete?
  • How are goals set and reviewed?
  • What would you like the person in this role to improve first?

Watch out for

  • Describing every change as a success. Include something that did not work and what you learned.
